Our weekly “Get Real” post from Donna Jones:

I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. 14 This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.15 And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him. (1 John 5:13-15)

“If you happen to walk on Weatherwood Drive stop by and meet my parents. They’ll welcome you with open arms and make you feel like a million dollars. It’s just how they are.”

Not exactly what you’d typically say to an eighteen year old nanny who happens to work a block from your parents. But it’s what I said to a gal I met on Sunday.

In fact, I told her twice. Or was it three times? And I wrote down mom and dad’s names and address for good measure.

OK, maybe I went a bit overboard but I was certain if she knocked on their door she’d be greeted with a much needed smile and a big hug.

I was totally confident in the response she’d get.

Because some things you just know.

1 John 5:11-13 uses the word “know” three times and the word “confidence” once. We can know we have eternal life if we believe in the name of Jesus. We can know God hears our prayers. We can know we have what we ask for if we ask according to His will. This knowledge translates into real confidence.

Confident that heaven is real and certain. Confident that God bends down to hear your voice when you pray. Confident God will answer your prayers.

You can count on this. You can live by it. You can tell others to do the same.

Because some things you can just know.
