Love Looks a Lot Like Service

You were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Galatians 5:13-14)

The word “servant” gets a bad rap.

But it shouldn’t. Jesus said He came not be served but to serve. We are most like Jesus when we serve other human beings.

It’s also when we’re most fulfilled.

The world won’t let you in on that little secret. In fact, the world screams “indulge your flesh in every way possible!” Shop till you drop. Eat till you’re stuffed. Pamper yourself with every luxury you can afford—and even some you can’t. Go ahead. You deserve it. This is the path of fulfillment. Or so we’re told.

Here in Orange County we’re the poster children for living this way.

Sadly, we’re also the poster children for self-indulged women, dissatisfied men and entitled kids. We have more stuff than we know what to do with and less happiness than we think we deserve.

But maybe—just maybe—the path to a fulfilling life is to focus less on self and more on service. Maybe it’s using the gifts God gave me to elevate the life of someone other than me. Maybe when I give I mysteriously get. Serving is the secret to satisfaction—the kind that’s deep and real—because it unleashes the purpose for which I was born: To love and be loved.
